Top Gun Maverick Plot
Let us first understand the timeline of this new film. Top Gun Maverick is set after three decades of Top Gun. We have Maverick being a US Navy test pilot. Soon enough, he is appointed to train Super Hornet pilots.
These young minds are assembled together by Cyclone and Warlock in order to carry out a high-end mission. The Pentagon is here again posing yet another threat to the United States.
This top-notch mission will bomb a uranium enrichment plant located at some unnamed venue.
Given the fact that this is an action film, obviously, the plant will not be so easy to destroy. It is protected by a powerful missile called SAM. The air base is guarded well by trained fighters.
Then we see Maverick plotting out a plan to defeat the layers of protection. This attack will take two groups of Super Hornets flying through the canyon and destroying the whole plant.
As we see, during the training procedures, there is a lot of resistance faced by Maverick. This was shown by trainees such as Hangman and Rooster.
Did Maverick and Rooster complete the mission?
Rooster is the son of Maverick’s late friend Goose. He soon comes across his ex-girlfriend Penny. Maverick comes to realize that Goose’s late mother wanted her son to never fly because she was scared he would die like his father.
Thus, Maverick immediately blocks Rooster’s application to the Naval Academy. With Iceman soon dead, things get steady in the film. We see the mission inching closer day by day. Rooster still holds the grudge because his career is set back immensely due to the whole promise thing.
Maverick is now responsible for selecting the pilots. He arranges Phoenix and WSO Bob. On the other hand, we have Payback with WSO Fanboy paired with Rooster.
The mission is now in full swing. We see our teams proceeding for a better attack. Soon, Rooster is found at a dead end and thus, Maverick sacrifices his jet in order to protect his friend’s kid.
The rest of the team thinks that Maverick is actually dead and thus, returns to the carrier. All this while, Rooster comes back, despite him having negative orders to do so, just to save Maverick from a helicopter gunship.
Top Gun Maverick: Ending Explained
But soon enough, we see him being shot down as well. Maverick and Rooster are now working together. They start to shoot down the enemies but run out of weapons.
Hangman comes back with the team to shoot the Su-57 that was shooting at our two leads. Maverick and Rooster are now saved and the mission is completed.
Well, the film did not end here, but rather on a very happy and emotional note. Rooster and Maverick, work on a project together after this mission at a familiar test facility.
Penny also enters the scene with her daughter Amelia. Maverick starts to interact with the little kid and even takes her out for a spin on the airplane. In the ending scene, we see Rooster walking towards a picture that represents Maverick and him completing the mission.
Another picture shows his father and a young Maverick while they used to work together. Rooster soon connects the dots and the film ends.
